Transitional Dining Rooms

The highly polished dining table made of figured cherry, together with the comfortable velvet upholstered English chairs, creates an elegant dining atmosphere in a relatively small space.

This dining room, which has no exterior windows, was softened with the addition of a fountain and lush greenery. The color scheme reinterprets the primary classic colors of red, yellow and blue in softer values; a silver marble finish was used on the columns and molding for depth.

An electric candlelight chandelier coupled with an oversized beveled mirror featuring a mosaic inset of flowers shaped from seashells adds a touch of seaside grandeur to this clean, uncluttered look.

Replacing the large rarely used central dining room table with two intimate seating groups allows this room to become a daily destination where you can enjoy coffee and read the paper or entertain family and friends. The combination of glass tabletops, wicker furniture and silk fabrics is a refreshing twist on the traditional dining room suite.

This bold dining room features rust-colored walls and rust, olive and gold draperies that emphasize the shapes of the windows. Curves are echoed in the heavy iron chandelier, the oval backs of the chairs and the Palladian images in the artwork on the sidewall. Photo by Ralph Alswang.

Bring in crisp white wainscoting to keep a rich color like this chocolate brown from making a space feel too cave-like

Glamorous entertaining was the idea kept in mind when designing this dramatic dining room for a Florida vacation home. Existing chairs were reupholstered with elegant fabric from Europe. A vintage art deco design was applied to the recessed ceiling with Venetian plaster to mimic the play off the mirrored wall that was original to the home. Backlight pedestals for added drama and a striking Swarovski crystal chandelier completes the look. Photograph by Roy Quesada.

A casual dining area with a custom sized table keeps a neutral tone. Window treatments are simple and airy while a splash of color in the artwork brings this peaceful room to life.
